Art and History of this Hermès Scarf

Christine Henry's graphic world is a magnificent blend of symbols and floral motifs. She says she draws her inspiration from tales and legends from all over the world, from mythologies and from the depiction of animals and plants in ancient and more recent civilisations. With this scarf, in which every motif is a symbol, Christine Henry summons our collective imagination. India, land of the maharajahs and their sumptuous palaces, where everything answers to the great cosmic order. The doors of these palaces are richly decorated because they are, physically as well as spiritually, a passage between two worlds. At the centre of these doors, two inverted trees of life bearing flowers and fruit symbolise the Bodhi Tree, under which the Buddha attained Nirvana. Four figures, two men and two women, dance around these trees. Indian dance is a language for speaking to the gods and telling the stories of Hindu mythology. Other fundamental symbols of this culture are also present: the peacock, the lotus and, in the four corners of the scarf, the elephant, the horse, the tiger and the cow, the emblematic animals of India.
